Safe ِِِDrugs Versus Innovative Drugs (Can We Have Both?)

Vera Lúcia Raposo * ORCID logo

Drugs are especially dangerous products, and because of this they need to undergo a very demanding evaluation process before they reach the market. Drugs are also essential for promoting and maintaining health, improving quality of life and even avoiding death. Too many restrictions on them may cause a shortage in the availability of new drugs. The process of drug approval must therefore be demanding enough to select only the safest drugs, but not so demanding that patients are deprived of essential new therapeutic alternatives. The solution rests in investing more in pharmacovigilance to promote patient safety without limiting innovation.
